What is Sewing Circle Studios?
Sewing Circle Studios is a company founded in 2022 as a vehicle for my video editing and production work for filmmakers, nonprofits, institutions and companies.
Why “Sewing Circle Studios”? Filmmaking is collaborative work, it shares many similarities with tailoring, and creative writing. Some of my favorite creative experiences have been collaborating with groups of innovative, diversely skilled people, who work in fields I support such as: environmental and wildlife protection, social justice, nonviolence, health, community building and activism, filmmaking, music and other arts. Sometimes these collaborative experiences bring to mind the connection and shared creativity of a sewing circle, a group of friends who meet regularly to make things, one project together, or sometimes individual projects in the presence of each other’s creativity. I acknowledge the long (often hidden) history of craftswomanship in sewing, tailoring, quilting, writing, photography, collage, dance, music, performance art, film and video production, and other fields where women persisted in their craft, and the safer spaces they pioneered for those of us who come afterward. I’m especially grateful to women of color who have been, and are, leaders in the courageous first steps in the diversification of these fields, that further open possibilities for all people. Honoring these women in my own work, I strive to create safe, inclusive work spaces for myself and everyone I work with.
